Bold Fashion Choices--So Hideous It's Good?!?

Obviously, in the Golden Age they had no idea what worked yet, so they were pretty much throwing throwing everything at the wall to see what stuck.

So when Alan Scott had to chose a costume...

...no one was there to tell them how god-awful it was.

Still it did fit his prescription for "a costume that is bizarre that once I am seen I will never be forgotten."

I mean, there's absolutely no way that costume should ever work...

...but damned if it doesn't!!

Come back soon, Alan Scott...and keep the original costume, please!

From All-American Comics #16 (1940)

What's neat about Alan's costume is that it feels like it was designed for a different genre of hero. There's a bit of the masked manhunter types with a bit of mysticism thrown in.

It IS anrodiculous costume, and yet...somehow Alan makes it work, dammit.
