How To Go Steady!

Rather than bore you with my usual trivial obsessions today, I'm going to direct you to someone else's fine work.

Jacque Nodell has been doing the Sequential Crush blog for years now. And while we here at Slay Monstrobot have occasionally dipped our toes into the vast sea of romance comics, Jacque dives deeply into the genre, giving us great (and loving) posts on the stories, creators, and the history these all-too-often dismissed comics.

Well, now she has a book out, and we've gotta respect a blogger who has made the dream:

How To Go Steady started as a Kickstarter project. Sadly, it failed to achieve its funding goal, but Jacque didn't give up, and now it's been published as one of them there new-fangled ebook thingies!!

The book's subtitle pretty much describes the content: Timeless Dating Advice, Wisdom, and Lessons from Vintage Romance Comics. Many romance comics contained advice columns, and HTGS examines the kind of help being doled out to lover-lorn tweens and teens throughout the years.

It's all too easy to mock these columns, but Jacque does a really good job of putting them in historical and social context, and discovering that the advice they gave was often surprisingly good.

The book is available on Amazon for less than the price your morning coffee (and it's free if you subscribe to Kindle Unlimited). So do yourself a favor and get it, or give it this season as an inexpensive e-stocking stuffer.

P.S. Jacque's grandfather created Green Lantern, so you kinda of have to respect that legacy.
