Spoiler Saturday--Steel #1

No, Doomsday does not kill Steel in this issue, despite approximately 1,047 callbacks to Superman's death, including a tattered cape fluttering on a pole at the end.

But Doomsday does beat the living crap out of him, so much that he can't even move, and leaps off to who knows where with him.

Please remember the last substantial appearance we had from Steel: in the Supermanless run on Superman, Atlas beat the living crap out of him, putting him into a coma.

So, apparently John Henry Irons is now fulfilling the J'onn J'onzz role in the DC Universe--the character the bad guy creams easily so the reader can go, "Oh, that bad guy is wicked powerful!"

Because, obviously, when you have a an engineering genius who, inspired by Superman, makes a super-suit and has a bad-ass giant hammer, well, there just aren't any other stories to tell besides him getting the crap beat out of him, right??

Sigh...

Steel is taking Connor Hawke's place as the Mr. Bill of the DCU.
